The Location field is used to describe geographic associations for the work. It is NOT used for museum locations. That information is recorded in the Repository field. Location is typically used for works of architecture and large-scale works of art. A rule of thumb is that if the work can be easily moved, it will not have data in the Location field. Exceptions for this are in cases in which a work was been made or was located in a specific place and subsequently moved.
The Location field group consists of 6 fields. Questions to ask yourself:
For more information on Location see CCO, pages 189-201.
This a field to record the desired display for location values. No matter which thesaurus is used to create a location record the desired formula for the display of city/state/country locations is: “City, State”, “City, Province”, or “City, Country”. Avoid abbreviations when possible. Location information can also be included in the subject field in the case where a work of art depicts an actual place. See the Subject field for more information.
This field allows to record alternate phrases or terms for locations. Often the Thesauri will provide possible variants.
Limit the location types to the following values: creation, discovery, exhibition, formerSite, installation, intended, performance, publication, site, other. Use 'site' for the current location of immovable works. If these do not not seem appropriate for the work you're cataloging, see Brian or Steve.
