===== Location ===== ==== Overview ==== (Req, Rep, TGN/LOC Authorities) The Location field is used to describe geographic associations for the work. It is NOT used for museum locations. That information is recorded in the Repository field. Location is typically used for works of architecture and large-scale works of art. A rule of thumb is that if the work can be easily moved, it will not have data in the Location field. Exceptions for this are in cases in which a work was been made or was located in a specific place and subsequently moved. The //Location// field group consists of 5 fields. Questions to ask yourself: * Where is it now? * Where was it before? * Where was it made? * Where was it discovered? For more information on Location see //CCO, pages 189-201.// ---- ==== Fields ==== === Location === This a field to record the desired display for location values. No matter which thesaurus is used to create a location record the desired formula for the display of city/state/country locations is: "City, State", "City, Province", or "City, Country". Avoid abbreviations when possible. Location information can also be included in the subject field in the case where a work of art depicts an actual place. See the Subject field for more information. === Location name variant === This field allows to record alternate phrases or terms for locations. Often the Thesauri will provide possible variants. === Location type === As of October 2015, the policy for Location type has changed. Please fill out this field with the location type provided by Getty TGN. For example, the preferred place type for Vulci, Italy [7015539] is //deserted settlement//. If such an entry does not exist in Inscribe, please create one. **Do not change the existing entries**; your supervisor will do this so that in the future, only one entry exists for each location. (Use the former list of location types to complete the **Location context** field: creation, discovery, exhibition, formerOwner, formerRepository, formerSite, installation, intended (for unrealized projects), other, owner, performance, publication, repository, site (use for current locations for architecture and archaeology).) === Location refid source === Record here the Thesaurus used to create the Location Record. TGN/LOC Authorities === Location refid === Record here the refid from the Thesaurus for the record. ---- === Location context === Limit the location context types to the following values: creation, discovery, exhibition, formerOwner, formerRepository, formerSite, installation, intended (for unrealized projects), other, owner, performance, publication, repository, site (use for current locations for architecture and archaeology) If these do not not seem appropriate for the work you're cataloging, ask your supervisor. ---- ==== Examples ==== **Location:** Dessau, Germany **Location name variant:** **Location type:** site **Location refid source:** Getty TGN **Location refid:** 7012804 ---- **Location:** New York, New York **Location name variant:** New York City, New York **Location type:** performance site **Location refid source:** Getty TGN **Location refid:** 7007567
