UMass Amherst Libraries Host Author Talk with Deborah McCutchen, Kirsten Mosher, and Cindy Snow
The UMass Amherst Libraries host “Whales, Candy, Insects & Jellyfish: Three Writers Speculating on Environmental Crisis” on Wednesday, March 27, 6-7:30 p.m., in the Science and Engineering Library Learning Studio in the Lederle GRC Lowrise. This reading and book signing event features authors Deborah McCutchen, Kirsten Mosher, and Cindy Snow.
Deborah McCutchen (they/them), College of Natural Sciences faculty member, will read from their creative nonfiction and fiction works, Whale Road and Jellyfish Dreaming, as a means of creating community and conversation around the themes of environmental crisis and conservation explored in their writing.
Two other local authors, Kirsten Mosher and Cindy Snow, will read highlights from their own works on the theme of environmental crisis, expanding the conversation beyond the walls of UMass into the greater community.
“Environmental crisis is a subject that is really important to me,” says Irene Tournas, the Science and Engineering librarian coordinating this event, “especially as I think about how temperatures in Massachusetts have risen almost 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit since 1900 (NOAA). Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we listen to voices outside of the dominant STEM narratives, and it is vital that we create community while we do so. That is the purpose of this event, to understand our changing world through artistic narratives that challenge the boundaries of these topics, helping us to imagine a better future for all.”
