Press Release: Libraries Collaborate with Office of Faculty Development to Produce “New Forms of Scholarly Publishing: A Panel Discussion of Challenges and Opportunities”

The UMass Amherst Libraries will host “New Forms of Scholarly Publishing: A Panel Discussion of Challenges and Opportunities” on Thursday, April 4, 1-2 p.m. in the W. E. B. Du Bois Library, Floor 26, Room 2601. Facilitated by Christine Turner, Scholarly Communication Librarian, the panel will explore ways faculty and graduate students are disrupting traditional publication channels through open scholarship. Registration is free.

Open scholarship, as defined by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, is “The principle and practice of making research products and processes available to all, while respecting diverse cultures, maintaining security and privacy, and fostering collaborations, reproducibility, and equity.” 

The panelists will give brief overviews of their research projects, as well as discuss motivation, impacts, and challenges regarding open scholarship.

• Luiz Amaral, Professor and Director of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, will talk about launching and editing the multilingual international open access journal, Living Languages.
• Matthew Fertakos, PhD Candidate in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, will talk about publishing open data for the Historical Plant Sales database.
• Rebecca Seifried, Geospatial Information Librarian, will talk about publishing her archaeological research using open access licenses and developing UMAP GeoData.
